Communication Link

The moonwalking astronaut will require two separate communications systems.  The more traditional of the two is a digital communications link between the astronaut and lander, which provides basic voice communications, health status monitoring, and a digital video link among other things.  The key figures of merit for this link are (1) the maximum sustainable link distance, (2) the achievable bitrate, and (3) the link power consumption.

The second, more novel system is the link between the astronaut and an array of passive RFID tags he will drop along his path.  This link is critical for the astronaut to be able to accurately determine his position, enabling him to identify the location of important discoveries and most importantly to safely navigate back to the lander.  The key figures of merit for this link are (1) the range within which the RFID tags can be read and (2) the link power consumption.
